Career Transformation

UMMA’s Career transformation program focuses on 3 major phases that help empower and transform our community’s residents.  The UMMA Center’s career development program is focused on erasing the skill gap that is preventing the community from obtaining higher income employment.  We partner with the local colleges, nonprofit organizations, and trade associations to provide a full solution.

The UMMA Center has implemented the first 2 phases and will roll out the third phase in 2011. UMMA’s Career Development program is led by its Executive Director, Operations Manager, and trained volunteers.  Below is a chart and description of each of the phases.

Phase 1

The purpose of this phase is to build the foundation of education by focusing on general education (GED), computer training, and financial literacy.  This phase is UMMA Center’s Education Empowerment program.  Career transformation begins with building an education foundation in those three major areas.

Phase 2

The next phase focuses on developing a career path and general professional skills.  It starts with creating a career development plan.  This is followed by career mentoring with the help of a community member who has been successful in the same career path.  Finally UMMA helps build interviewing skills by conducting mock interviews with feedback for improvement.

Phase 3

The final phase is career development preparation.  UMMA center has been doing this informally since 2006 but is currently planning to roll out a formal program in the second half of 2011.  This final phase consists of guidance and in-depth preparation for placement into a career path.  This could be placement into a trade, college, or job.
